Many of you will have bought a wine and read an acronym next to the wine's name on the label.
This is explained by the fact that in Italy the wine are designated with different abbreviationa such as IGT, DOC or DOCG that identify a certain type of product, vinified in certain regions with strict rules that regulate the production.
With the wine pyramid we indicate a sort of classification that from the bottom upwards constitutes a theoretical qualitative scale, based on the production rules of the wines marketed.
TABLE WINES
Table wines represent the lowest level of the pyramid.
They are wines that have no production limits but only qualitative and analytical limits.
Es: red or white table wines.
WINES WITH TYPICAL GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION (IGT):
Are wines coming from a determined geographic area, from which it takes its name.
They are on the secon level of pyramid, but their positioning should not be deceived because there are IGT wines of the highest quality such as SUPER TUSCAN WINES.
WINES WITH A CONTROLLED DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN (DOC):
They are wines that belong to a specific geographic area and take the name of the wine-growing area of production.
The production of this wines must follow strict production rules concerning yields per hectare, the vine varieties, analytical and organoleptic characteristics, bottles to be used, the cork and the date of entry to the market.
Some DOC, including Oltrepo Pavese, also provide for the application on the bottle of a collar with printed a number that certifies that in the bottles there is DOC wine, obtained according to production regulations.
WINES WITH CONTROLLED AND GUARANTEED DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN (DOCG):
This category concerns wines that have already been recognized as a DOC for at least 5 years.
All DOCG wines must necessarily include a state label bearing a serial number and the name.
This category rapresents the higtest step of the qualitative pyramid.
